Theodor Herzl Schools Treat Germans to a taste of Africa 2012

on Sunday, 29 April 2012. Posted in General News

Ten teenage school pupils from Germany have spent a fortnight soaking up the best that the Bay has to offer, thanks to the hospitality of Theodor Herzl Primary and High Schools.

Theodor Herzl estalished the enriching pupil exchange relationship with Conventz Private School, in Roetgen, Germany, in 2008, and the programme has been enthusiastically received as an opportunity to broaden children’s understanding of daily life.  The teenagers are hosted in the family homes of Theodor Herzl School pupils.

“This is the fifth year in which groups of Conventz pupils have visited Theodor Herzl. A group of 12 of our pupils visited there during the July holidays last year and there are plans to return next year,” said Jutta Rohwer, Theodor Herzl German teacher.

“The exchange is a fantastic opportunity for both the South African and German children to not only see another part of the world but also to experience everyday school life in another culture and country. The German/Jewish connection adds another layer to our relationship, and is an opportunity to inspire tolerance and understanding in this young generation.”

Theodor Herzl is one of few schools in the Metro to offer German as subject. Pupils may choose between German, French or Hebrew in grades 7 to 9, and may elect to take German as an eighth subject for matric. German is also offered as a home language to children of contract workers, such as those in the Metro’s motor industry, who attend the school.

During their two-week visit the Conventz pupils attended school classes for four days, and enjoyed an action-packed programme that included a close encounter with cheetahs at Kragga Kamma Game Reserve,  an African Drumbeat workshop, a tour of the Volkswagen Auto Pavilion and trips to the Addo elephants, Jeffreys Bay, the Tsitsikamma forest and a shark dive in Mossel Bay.

Our court was in much need of attention

 BEFORE

Thanks to the efforts of the Can-Do committee, we could upgrade our court early this year to a multipurpose court. All of our tennis posts and netball poles are easily set up or removed for a quick change of sports. A fantastic job was done by Jeff Myburg and his team who resurfaced the court for us.

Bulletin from the Theodor Herzl Building Committee

on Monday, 20 June 2011. Posted in General News

Hi there, fellow parents!

To keep you all in the loop, we would like to tell you that we will shortly commence cutting down the blue gum and other trees on our 14th Avenue and Church Street boundaries.

In doing so, we are preparing for the construction of a long awaited secure boundary wall, and ensuring better grass growth for our sports fields. (The blue gums suck an incredibly large quantity of water leading to poor grass growth in the vicinity.)

The boundary wall project, started last year, will be re-launched shortly. I am sure that you will agree that, from all points of view, including security of our children, this is a top priority project. You will have the opportunity to purchase individual pillars with your names on. A sample section will be completed within the next few days, and details of how to purchase a pillar, etc., will be released asap!

At the same time we are studying traffic flow and parking issues to ensure that our gates are positioned correctly and that traffic flows are improved along with traffic safety.

Some much needed repaving and proper drainage in certain areas, including the Pre Primary school drop off and parking area, are on a priority list.

If you can assist us, or have any comments or queries, please email them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Enjoy the up-coming school holidays!

Grand Gift!

on Monday, 06 June 2011. Posted in General News

The school has received the most wonderful gift of a Grand Piano for the school hall. The piano was the property of Solomon Palmer and his wife Miriam, who both passed away in 2009. Mr Palmer was a co-founder of Theodor Herzl School.

The piano was handed over by David Palmer, nephew of the Palmers, and ex-pupil of the school. We shall treasure this precious possession.

Father's Day Breakfast

on Friday, 03 June 2011. Posted in General News, Cando

A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty.

This introduced a wonderful talk on Fatherhood, which Mark Davidson shared with a group of dads at the Father's Day Breakfast. The CANDO moms served a scrumptious breakfast in a beautifully decorated hall, and Des Soutar of Continental Cars got everyone's pulse racing with a display of magnificent machines.

Thank you, Dads, for attending, and have a memorable Father's Day!
