Donation of Two-minute Noodles & Cup-a-Soup PDF Print E-mail
The Interact Forum is undertaking a collection drive for two minutes noodles and cup-a-soup.
The beneficiary is the Algoa Bay Council for the Aged.
The reason for these particular products is that the elderly have to make their own food on Saturdays and by receiving the soup/noodles this will make their preparation much easier.
Your donations will be much appreciated. We would like to deliver these donations on Friday 20 August.

Date changes PDF Print E-mail
Please be advised that our annual golf day has been postponed until 2011.

Vehicular Traffic on School Property PDF Print E-mail

We are increasingly concerned about traffic flow on our school property.
The property is the preserve of our children and the greatest of care should be taken on entering and leaving the school premises.
There are speed restrictions in place and these must be observed.
We are aware that a number of motorists are not observing the right-of-way at the traffic circle adjacent the primary school.
In addition, we remain concerned about the approach speed and the consequences for our children.
Please be particularly observant in this regard.
Please refrain from parking on the grass verges on both sides of the road adjacent the high school.
Generally, there is sufficient parking either to the left or the right of the main entrance to the high school.
In the interest of all children’s safety, we ask that all visitors refrain from driving on the school grounds at all times.

Grade 12 learners.

If your son or daughter is in possession of an unendorsed driver’s licence and if he/she would like to drive to school, written permission must be obtained from the Grade 12 form teachers.
A copy of the licence is required to be kept on file at school.
Please understand that Theodor Herzl School does not accept responsibility for damage to any vehicle on site.
In addition, we discourage in the strongest terms, recently qualified drivers from ferrying their school friends.
There are insurance and other implications in this regard.
Pupils who comply with the above are welcome to park in the area to the left of the main entrance.
Please refrain from parking in the staff parking area.

Third Term Newsletter PDF Print E-mail

19 July 2010

Dear Parents

The euphoria of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is over. Thirty days of the best of football played in our country was a real privilege to behold and probably a once in a lifetime experience. I have written to Mr Danny Jordaan on behalf of our school and have congratulated him and his organizing committee on their wholehearted contributions to the success of the tournament. I hope that he will be our guest in the not too distant future and share with us his experiences.

Welcome back then to the third term. Our Grade 12’s begin their trial examinations in six weeks and they will in particular need to begin preparation in earnest for these all important exams. In welcoming all learners and staff, I would like to extend a special welcome to the Schemberg family from Germany. Jana has joined our Grade 10 class. We also welcome Olivia Bestic into Grade 9.

Mrs Tracey Schoemaker will substitute for Mrs Liz Herselman in our high school English department and we are more than confident that the learners will benefit from her expertise. We would also like to welcome back Ms Ingrid van den Hoek. We trust that her leave of absence was worthwhile.

SCHOOL SECURITY
In a concerted effort to provide all of our children, the staff and parents with the best possible security, we have employed ATLAS security to provide a daily vehicle patrol of our Campus and to monitor the movements of individuals who have no business at Theodor Herzl School. This system has proved to be a first class deterrent at a neighbouring school. I would like to thank the Board for approving this project and in addition, Mr Gary Schewitz, MD of ATLAS security, for his professional advice and support.

Please note that our school grounds are officially open from 7am (Monday- Friday). Generally, the high school building will be open at that time. Please exercise caution when dropping your children at school before the above time. No child must ever be left unattended.

I would like to thank Mr Stephen Walker for developing new signage for the school grounds. Please take note of the speed restrictions and the entrance/ exit signs. All of these are obviously in place with the interests of our children at heart.

GROUNDS
Please note that the school grounds are out of bounds from sunset on a Friday to sunset on a Saturday. There is new signage up around the premises and we would like you to adhere to these.

THANK YOU
We would like to thank Mr Dante Cicognini for effecting much needed repairs at our Pre-Primary school.

CLOSING DATES: 2010
Please note that the last day of school for all children in the fourth term, is Friday 3 December. As per our practice, school reports may be collected from school the following week on Tuesday 7 December.

GOLF DAY
Please be advised that the Golf Day date has been provisionally booked for 17 October 2010. Details to follow.

All parents are invited to attend the celebration of the school’s birthday on Friday 23 July at 11:00 in the Primary School quad. Entertainment will include; New AfroTeens, Steel Band, School Choir and special guests. Light refreshments will be provided.

E-MAIL ADDRESSES
Please note that forthwith we will be e-mailing all newsletters. In order to facilitate this process, please complete the reply slip provided and return to school by Friday 23 July. Very few parents responded to the last request.

We trust that the third term will be a successful and enjoyable term for you all.

Thank you.

NEWSLETTER TERM 2: JUNE 2010

Dear Parents

THEODOR HERZL SCHOOL is proud to be associated with FIFA World Cup organizer Mr Danny Jordaan. Mr and Mrs Jordaan’s son Mikhail, matriculated from the high school in 2006. Both Danny and his wife Roxanne were most supportive parents and it goes without saying, that we wish Danny every success with the FIFA World Cup.

We would also like to wish Bafana Bafana captain, Aaron Mokoena and his team strength and a firm resolve to do their country proud.
“This World Cup is not only important for football but it will help to strengthen and consolidate our democracy.”
Danny Jordaan

All good things come to pass and at a time when there is a premium on space at the high school, we are pleased to report that our Board of Governors has given approval for the construction of three classrooms.

Motivation for the new classrooms has been driven by a number of interested parties and we are grateful to parents Mr Mark Hardman and his wife Theresa who have given hours of their time to Theodor Herzl, for their inspiration and effort.
Mr Dante Cicognini together with previous Board chairman, Mr Geoff Herman, have calculated the most cost effective way of building and we trust that the foundation will be laid in the school holidays.

The Board chairman, Mr Ian Meyer and our treasurer Mr Mark Morris together with their executive, have seen the need for additional space for some time and it is as a result of their persistence that this project has become a reality.

We know that the high school staff and the learners will be delighted by this latest development. Hopefully, all will be ready for the beginning of the 2011 academic year.
Can- Do Committee

The Can- Do committee provided a delicious Fathers’ Day breakfast to the dads on Friday 4 June. I would like to thank Mrs Rika Haasbroek and her enthusiastic team for the delicious meal. Mrs Lizzie Mtyatyeni also deserves credit for her assistance.

Mr Markus Herr was our guest speaker on the day and he provided a most interesting and thought- provoking presentation on his recent expedition to base camp at Mt Everest. We would like to thank him for his time and preparation.

Rika and her team capped the weekend with a highly entertaining Music Trivia Evening on Saturday. There was much fun and laughter. Although the overall winners, Rock Dementia, wish to remain anonymous, rumour has it that the Hardman’s, Meyers’, Abrahams’ and Fays’ won the competition with relative ease.

Closure of Allister Miller Drive between Forest Hill Drive and entrance to Airport: 6 June 2010 - 13 July 2010

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality would like to advise all motorists that as from Sunday, 6 June 2010 Allister Miller Drive between Forest Hill Drive through to the circle going into the Airport will be closed to normal traffic as this area will be used for VIP access into the Air Force Base as well as parking space for all tour buses. This forms part of the city's transport plans for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

All traffic travelling to the Airport must use Heugh Road and Third Avenue. Motorists passing Summerstrand and Walmer must run via Forest Hill Drive to Heugh Road. The road will be reopened on Tuesday, 13 July 2010.

The Municipality apologises for the inconvenience.

Debating
The local Debate League kept us very busy as usual. The debater who won the most Best Speaker accolades this year was Jed Stephens. The overall winner of the League for 2010 was Woodridge. Lauren Khan, Siyasanga Mbikwana and and Kerushlen Marie are taking part in the NMMU Faculty of Law Debating Competition in a merged team with Lawson Brown. Furthermore some of our debaters have entered the Bay Pulse 2010: 15th National Universities Debating Championship taking place at NMMU in July. Good luck to our debaters!

Public Speaking
The 2010 High Schools’ Public Speaking Challenge was held in April and Darika Chetty represented Theodor Herzl. She is congratulated on achieving third position in this competition. Her topic was “If you speak your mind, mind what you speak” and her speech was a very enlightening and pertinent exposé of our various public personas who mind what they speak so well. You can read her speech in the next issue of Herzl Headlines.

The Toastmasters course took place this term and proved a very worthwhile venture. The final Toastmasters Graduation Dinner will take place next term and parents will be notified early in the new term.

The Nab ‘Ubomi Film Competition 2010
We are very pleased that our school is again being represented at this competition. Lauren Kahn’s screenplay has been selected as one of fifteen for production. To this end, Lauren as director and her team (which includes Kirsten Putziger as Producer, Siyasanga Mbikwana on Sound, Megan Chandler on Camera and Lighting and Galia Davimes as Script/behind-the-scenes documentary camera-person) will be attending a Film Training Camp in Cintsa, East London, chaperoned by our ever-enthusiastic and capable Mr Lynch. We wish them all the best in their very creative venture.

Theodor Herzl Fashion Show
Congratulations to the Matric Dance Committee who organised this splendid, professional event. With the entertaining Carol-Ann Kelleher of Algoa FM Emceeing and fabulous clothes, excellent music and lighting and to top it off – our very special Theodor models, it was a stunning evening. Special congratulations must go to Sonja Woolf who directed the show as well as Philippa Rauch and Kerushlen Marie who helped with the organisation. Well done, Dance Committee! Thank you to those who were involved in making the fashion show such a success. We are most grateful to our models and parents for their support. The Dance Committee would like to thank Robin and Mr Lynch for their guidance and support.

Judaica Report
In preparation for Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers) and Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel became the focus of the Hebrew and Judaica lessons throughout the school and Israeli flags decorated the passages.  On Yom Ha'atzmaut all the pupils were treated to a birthday cake iced in blue and white to celebrate Israel's Day of Independence.

Our children, parents and most of the staff participated in the communal evening celebrations.

As Lag B'Omer started on Saturday night this year, it was celebrated during the day instead of our customary evening function.  Pupils, parents, other family members and teachers enjoyed a lovely day in the sun with delicious soup, rolls and fire-roasted potatoes served around a bonfire.  The younger children loved making the traditional bows and arrows and playing on the "jumping castle".

Discussions about the thousands of years of longing for Jerusalem took place on Yom Yerushalayim - Jerusalem Day.  The Jewish children watched a live transmission from the Western Wall on the internet and learnt the song "Jerusalem of Gold".

For Shavuot there was a presentation of readings and songs by the Primary School Jewish children.  They explained the meanings of the different names of the festival and its customs to the entire Primary School.  Fruit and vegetables were generously donated by all the learners and distributed to the needy by Mrs Hilary Bolton and Mr Isaac Rubin.

On Monday the 24th May, 5 High School teachers and 5 pupils went to the Abraham Levy Centre to listen to Tali Nates who is the Director of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre.  Both her father and uncle were saved by Oscar Schindler and she told fascinating stories of Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust. We were thanked profusely for taking the pupils there and their behaviour was impeccable.

We would like to appeal to all parents to assist us in ensuring that their children manage their study schedules as judiciously as possible.
