The French Club had its first meeting on Wednesday, 2 Feb, where we celebrated LA FETE DES ROIS. It is a celebration in France of Christ being visited by the three wise men and is normally held on the 6th of January. The meeting turned out to be lots of fun and we started of by singing a “J’aime la galette”, usually sang at this occasion by the young children. True to French tradition, galettes (cake made of puff pastry and filled with frangipane) containing une feve (lucky charm) were served. Philippa Rauch and Jemina Mentz made these cakes and decorated them with a golden crown on top. Emma Sweet, la cadette (the youngest member of the group), sat under the table and called out which guest each slice of cake should be given to. Anien Dreyer and Yuliya Konovodova were the queens of the day as their slices contained la feve. They were crowned but fortunately, against French tradition, they were not asked to buy a round of drinks for all their companions! The next meeting of the French club will be on the 17th of February where we will celebrate Valentines Day. |
